WHO recommends first malaria vaccine for kids as young as 5 months

The World Health Organization has recommended RTS protein-based malaria vaccines, s for use with children living in places with medium and high transmission risks. The organization announced its current recommendation, stating that there must be a “wide use” of this vaccine with children participating in smaller pilot programs in certain countries.

RTS, S has a difference to the first malaria vaccine that offers protection against illness in young people. This product has been tested under the ongoing pilot program in various countries over the past few years; More than 800,000 children have received a malaria vaccine as part of this trial.

Unfortunately, malaria – serious illness caused by parasites and spread by mosquitoes – remains the cause of death and disease in children living in sub-Saharan Africa. According to WHO, more than a quarter of a million children under the age of five die every year in this region from malaria, making vaccines the main milestone for public health in the region.

Talking about it is who is the regional director for Africa Dr. Matshidiso Moueti, who said:

For centuries, malaria has followed Sub-Saharan Africa, causing enormous personal suffering. We have long hoped for effective malaria vaccines and now for the first time, we have such vaccines recommended for widespread use. Today’s recommendations offer a glimmer of hope for continents that discuss the heaviest burden of disease and we hope that more African children are protected from malaria and grow into healthy adults.

These recommendations include children in high-risk locations that will receive four vaccine doses ranging from the age of five months. Who said the recommendation was based on data on vaccine recipients in three African countries; About 2.3 million doses of malaria vaccines have been given over the past two years, revealing “profitable safety profiles.”
