Steam Deck teardown tells you exactly how to be bad
Today people in the valve go ahead and tear the deck of the next generation gaming steam device. The Steam Valve deck is not exactly like your average DIY PC. Instead, this is more like … you can open it, but you might not be possible. Valve videos like parents who tell a child: I know this looks fun, but don’t do it.
The video you will see includes more than some mixed messages. You will see valve recommending that you avoid opening your steam deck, but also suggest that you “stay here in the coming months for the source for the substitute: Thumbsticks, SSD, and maybe more.” The first message you will see in this video is literally “You shouldn’t do this.”
The screwdriver that you see in the video includes number 88248 P0 and 88170 P00 – it’s just a PHILLIPS head screwdriver in size 0 and 00 – the brand they use is the Pratt-Read USA. They are very small. This video also has tweezers – always helpful when you deal with small screws and smooth plugs and ports.
Note that when you watch this video and listen to various warnings, they may sound over-the-top, but actually quite accurate. One puncture of the battery and you can see the fire – one zap electrostatic discharge from your body can cause the destruction of the work order of this machine.
It is important to note that at 2:10, right after the narrator says, “You might have to hand it on to the pro”, it is shown (with a text and circle stop) that the Teardown operator ESD strap does not touch the skin, as supposed – “UPS.
They also talk about how they use a 2230 (SSD) module for data storage, using the M.2 connector for this hardware. But – again – because the instructions suggest: You should not do this from the start.
Also note: if you have ever had an official steam controller before they are stopped forever, you might have done our own tealerdown – and will find this new teardown quite familiar. Almost as if Valve used a lot of what was learned in the construction of the steam controller to make this new steam deck.
